EXTRACTIVISM, WIOMING'S DESPOT
2024
In the conservative Cowboy State, nickname of the country’s least populous state, the industrial complex corrupts institutions and silences dissenting voices. Whether it’s oil, gas, coal or uranium, the profits generated by the exploitation of these common resources are used to finance an omertà and keep the social and environmental impacts quiet.
In the heart of Wyoming, the Wind River Indian Reservation finds itself caught between a federal government that is seizing water and land and an extractive industry that is polluting groundwater and rivers and causing extreme cancer rates among a historically traumatized and still oppressed population. These abuses are part of a pattern of environmental racism and perpetuate a historical colonial enterprise.
Bolstered by the return of a staunch fossil fuel advocate to the White House, the industry’s stranglehold is not about to loosen.
